Exciting times for production and operations at Windfall Lumber!

By Martin Bills, Production Manager With success comes recognition of limitations. In our case, we have needed to substantially upgrade our plant & facilities to allow for increased production capacity.  For the past couple of years we've been making the best use of our resources & machinery.  Now we are on the verge of knocking down walls and reconfiguring our production flow. Phase 1: We’re improving our work environments with increased dust collection capacity including sophisticated spark detection & air return systems.  We’ve outgrown our old system, so for us this is really cool! We are very excited about what amounts to a big central vacuum cleaning system.

Phase 2 of our expansion will include new energy efficient lighting and more space to accommodate a new finish booth and a drying area.  This will increase our throughput,  increase capacity and  finish options for our customers.  We’re working closely with our local air quality folks, and everything is proceeding according to plan (with all the usual hiccups providing minor comic relief.) We've worked with Impact Washington over the past 6 months to incorporate Lean Manufacturing strategies.  With the expansion we can fully implement a new production flow plan, that brings raw materials to one end of the plant, and ships finished goods from the other. From the perspective of this production manager, it’s going to be a great 2014!  Better toys for our employees, better service to our customers, and a nicer environment to make it all happen.  Who knows…maybe I’ll get a nicer office since my current abode is being demolished for the finish area. Stay tuned for an update as we move into Phase 2. Thanks for caring.  Be well. -Marty
